Rebecca Saunders awarded Roche Commission to write new piano concerto for Nicolas Hodges
On 29 August 2020, the prolific contemporary pianist Nicolas Hodges will inaugurate the world premiere performance of Rebecca Saunders’ Piano Concerto at the Lucerne Festival. Roche, in collaboration with the Lucerne Festival and the Lucerne Festival Academy, has awarded Rebecca Saunders their prestigious Roche Commission to enable her to compose a piano concerto for Hodges, who breaks new ground in 2018-19 with a series of world and UK premieres, including three premieres at the Wigmore Hall on 30 October and the UK premiere of Simon Steen-Andersen’s Piano Concerto on 12 January.

At a Sunday morning coffee concert on 23rd September, cellist Natalie Clein and pianist Yeol Eum Son will perform two key works by composer Ernest Bloch at the Wigmore Hall, launching the celebration of the forthcoming anniversaries for the composer. 2019 marks the 60th anniversary of Bloch’s death in America, and 2020 the 140th anniversary of his birth in Switzerland, and the International Ernest Bloch Society plans to mark these milestones by highlighting further performances and recordings involving outstanding musicians enamoured with Bloch’s music, including Natalie Clein, Raphael Wallfisch, Rivka Golani and Piers Lane.

On 14 July, Jocelyn’s new piece Hysteria: A Song Cycle for Singer and Psychiatrist receives its world premiere at Hoxton Hall supported by the Wellcome Trust. September sees an exciting time for the composer with the UK premiere of Memorial, a poem by Alice Oswald, staged in the Barbican Theatre. Adam, the play based on the real life story of Egyptian trans Adam Kashmiry, for which Jocelyn wrote the music, receiving its London premiere and her score for the ballet Dust, part of Lest We Forget, is revived this time at Sadler’s Wells
