Within this period 28% of the audience were students, while 3.01% were under 18. The national average is 8% for under 31 attendance according to the Audience Agency’s 2017 report of National Classical Music Audiences.

Key highlights this season in Versailles include two new productions by award winning director Marshall Pynkoski: Charpentier’s David et Jonathas conducted by Gaétan Jarry in the Chapelle Royale (10-12 November) and Grétry’s La Caravane du Caire (9,10,11 June) conducted by Hervé Niquet in the Opéra Royal. Niquet also conducts Purcell’s King Arthur (18,19,20 November) in a revival of the vibrant production by Shirley et Dino, who recently directed Rameau’s Platée at the Opéra Royal to critical acclaim.

The performance has been adapted by Deirdre Shields from Lee’s much-loved books, Cider with Rosie, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning, and A Moment of War.

The recording features Mirror of Perfection with soprano Elizabeth Watts, baritone Roderick Williams, the IKON Singers and Britten Sinfonia, both conducted by David Hill on 6 May 2022 (SRCD.406 Dolby Atmos recording). Vision of a Garden is a covid-inspired cantata written by Richard Blackford. Vision of a Garden is based on the COVID diaries of the Choir member Peter Johnstone, who spent three months in intensive care with the virus in Spring 2020.

Acclaimed violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen returns to curate her third Festival in the area, in which she has strong family ties. The internationally-renowned Festival takes place over two extended weekends in October: Dartmoor is the focus for 5-9 October 2022, while concerts taking place from 13-16 October 2022 centre around Exmoor, with concerts held in close proximity to each other in beautiful venues from rural arts centres to cathedrals around the vast and arresting wilderness of the moors of the South West.
