The Göteborg Opera announces its 2017-18 Season with the Scandinavian premiere of Jonathan Dove’s opera The Monster in the Maze and two further new productions including Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos and an unusual double bill of Weill & Brecht’s Seven Deadly Sins with Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. On the centenary of legendary Swedish soprano’s birth, the Göteborg Opera will host the starriest gala to pay homage to soprano Birgit Nilsson - “a voice of heroic proportions” (Guardian) and the greatest Wagnerian soprano of her day - by lining up eight leading Swedish Wagnerian sopranos including Nina Stemme. The Göteborg Opera is currently preparing for its first Wagner Ring Cycle directed by artistic director Stephen Langridge and conducted by Evan Rogister. The Ring will commence with Das Rheingold in the autumn of 2018 continuing for 4 years culminating in the 400th anniversary of the City of Gothenburg. The autumn of 2018 will also see GöteborgsOperans Danskompani make its debut at Sadler’s Wells with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s double bill of Icon and Noetic.

The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras appear in three different guises in free events across London. Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his forces will be performing at the Victoria and Albert Museum on 15 December and joined by their Monteverdi Apprentices for workshops and a performance at Morley College. The Monteverdi Apprentices also celebrate the end of their year long apprenticeship in a farewell concert on 26 November. Sir John Eliot Gardiner has spent the last 50 years training up the next generation of singers and musicians through his Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras; including artists such as Dame Felicity Palmer, John Shirley-Quirk, Charles Brett, Gareth Keene, Sir Bryn Terfel and Mark Padmore.

Christophe Russet and Les Talens Lyriques return Lully’s opera Alceste to the Palace of Versailles in a performance at the Opéra Royale on Sunday 10 December. This coincides will the release of Les Talens Lyriques’ recording of Alceste – the seventh in their series of Lully operas. The all-star cast includes Judith van Wanroij in the title role, Edwin Crossley-Mercer as Alcide and Emiliano Gonzalez Toro as Admète.

Following the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s critically acclaimed CD of music by Nimrod Borenstein, the orchestra’s patron Vladimir Ashkenazy returns to Oxford with a programme including Borenstein’s If You Will It, It Is No Dream alongside Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No.1 and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.1. Natalia Lomeiko, Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s Concertmaster, will appear as soloist in the concerto.

This CD is accompanied by texts from musicologists Gérard Condé, Hélène Cao and Pierre Sérié and historian Pierre Véron.

Lontano Records releases an album of welsh composer Grace Williams’ vocal works, featuring baritone Jeremy Huw Williams. Considered to be Wales’ most notable female composer, Grace Williams (1906-1977) was a student of Vaughan Williams. Her most well known works include Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes (1940) and Penillion (1955), which was written for the National Youth Orchestra. In 1949 she also became the first British woman to write the score for a feature film, with the British drama Blue Scar.
