OperaStreaming offers a seasonal program of video broadcasts, freely available on YouTube, from the Opera Theatres of Emilia-Romagna (Bologna, Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Ferrara Ravenna and Rimini) in collaboration with EDUNOVA-University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The project, that will run from 2019 through 2021, lets us enjoy Emilia-Romagna’s lyric tradition and opera productions from the rest of the world. OperaStreaming was born thanks to TeatroNet, a pioneering streaming program launched by the Culture Department of the Emilia-Romagna Region in 2012 who provided the technology that enabled all theatres to transmit their shows live.

In a new production to be broadcast on Sunday 11 April 2021, OperaStreaming presents Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia from the Teatro Municipale, Reggio Emilia.
Italian conductor Leonardo Sini – winner of the 2017 Maestro Solti International Conducting Competition – conducts the Filarmonica dell’Opera Italiana Bruno Bartoletti in a surreal new production directed by Fabio Cherstich, who has previously been involved in Rome’s unconventional OperaCamion productions.

Live from the Teatro Comunale di Modena on 6 February 2021, OperaStreaming presents a concert performance of Verdi’s Don Carlo in its four-act 1884 version.
Jordi Bernàcer directs the Orchestra dell’Emilia-Romagna Arturo Toscanini in Verdi’s dramatic tale of love and politics, joined by an internationally-acclaimed Italian cast including tenor Andrea Carè in the title role, bass Michele Pertusi as the King of Spain, baritone Luca Salsi as Rodrigo, soprano Anna Pirozzi as Elisabeth de Valois, and mezzo- soprano Judit Kutasi as the Princess Eboli.
OperaStreaming presents Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi in new digital production marking the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death
In homage to the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante (1321-2021), on Friday 22 January, OperaStreaming presents a new live digital production of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi from the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza, opening with readings from the famous work that inspired it, Dante’s Inferno.
Puccini’s last completed opera, Gianni Schicchi was composed during the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1917-18, in which the composer lost his sister. The one-act comic opera is based on a well-known incident from Dante’s Inferno, where the 13th- century Florentine knight Gianni Schicchi de’ Cavalcanti is seen condemned to Hell for impersonating Buoso Donati and changing his will so it is favourable to Schicchi. Puccini’s setting includes the famous aria ‘O mio babbino caro’, sung by Lauretta as she begs her father Schicchi to let her marry Rinuccio.

At the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza, Renato Bonajuto revives the elegant 2005 production of Il barbiere di Siviglia by Beppe de Tomasi, with the Orchestra dell'Emilia- Romagna Arturo Toscanini conducted by Nikolas Nägele, Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin.
OperaStreaming broadcasts Massenet’s Werther live from the Teatro Comunale di Modena on Friday 4 December
The latest production to be streamed live on OperaStreaming’s YouTube channel from the historic opera houses of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, Massenet’s Werther will be broadcast from the Teatro Comunale di Modena on Friday 4 December.
Internationally-renowned tenor Francesco Demuro takes the title role in Massenet’s opera, inspired by Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, with Veronica Simeoni as Charlotte, the object of his tragic affections. Since making his professional debut in Parma, Francesco Demuro has performed widely, including at La Scala, Teatro Real, Vienna State Opera, and as Alfredo in La traviata at London’s Royal Opera House. Veronica Simeoni has made her name in French repertoire, and has sung Charlotte for the Metropolitan Opera, in addition to Palermo, Lisbon and Rome.

This Sunday, OperaStreaming will broadcast Handel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo live from the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza with a young cast including Raffaele Pé as Aci, Giuseppina Bridelli as Galatea, and Andrea Mastroni as Polifemo.
The dramatic cantata was adapted regularly in the years following its 1708 premiere, written by the young Handel in Naples. This new production by Gianmaria Aliverta represents the first performance in modern times of the version written for the famous castrato singer Senesino – Francesco Bernardi – in the reconstruction and critical edition by Fabrizio Longo, Raffaele Pé and Luca Guglielmi, who conducts the baroque ensemble La Lira di Orfeo from the harpsichord.

This Sunday, OperaStreaming will broadcast Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas live from the Teatro Comunale di Modena with a cast including Michela Antenucci as Dido and Mauro Borgioni as Aeneas. The straight-to-streaming production by director Stefano Monti uses an expanded stage that includes the stalls of the theatre.

Verdi’s La traviata is presented from Modena on 18 October 2020, with Matteo Lippi in the role of Alfredo Germont alongside Maria Mudryak as Violetta Valery and Ernesto Petti as Giorgio Germont, in a unique new production by Stefano Monti, with the orchestra seated in the stalls and the audience in the boxes.
Italian tenor Matteo Lippi studied in Modena under the guidance of Mirella Freni and has recently appeared on the Glyndebourne Festival Tour and sung Alfredo at the Royal Danish Opera and at La Fenice. Khazak soprano Mudryak was one of the winners of the Placido Domingo Operalia competition in 2017 and has performed Violetta across Italy at San Carlo and Maggio Musicale. Previously in Modena, Monti has presented productions of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Britten’s The Little Sweep and Menotti’s Il Dittico.
OperaStreaming announces second season of nine new productions from the opera houses of Emilia-Romagna, free to view on YouTube
Following its successful launch in 2019, OperaStreaming streams nine operas on YouTube from the historic opera houses of Emilia-Romagna during the 2020-21 season, with fully-staged productions of Verdi’s La traviata in October from Modena and Verdi’s Otello from Bologna in November following a concert performance of Ernani from Parma on 25 September.
OperaStreaming brings together eight magnificent opera houses for the joint venture to promote the region’s unique operatic heritage, home to legendary singers Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci and Mirella Freni, and the great opera composer Giuseppe Verdi, born in Busseto near Parma. Verdi’s Aroldo premiered at the opening of the opera house in Rimini in 1857 and the rebuilt opera house on the site will present a fully-staged production of this little-known work on 16 April 2021.
