Biography

The Göteborg Opera was inaugurated in 1994 and is to be found next to Lilla Bommen in the Göteborg harbour. Here opera, dance and musicals are performed under the same roof. When architect Jan Izikowitz was drawing the opera house he found inspiration in the world of opera. But also in the splendid fairytale landscape surrounding Gothenburg harbour. Silhouettes of ships, hulls, wind-filled sails, bridges and harbour cranes can be seen in the architecture of the building.

The Göteborg Opera has 250,000 visitors per year and about 270 performances are given on the different stages. Several international stars have visited the opera house through the years. Nina Stemme, Peter Mattei and Katarina Dalayman are a few of them.

The Göteborg Opera announces its 2022/23 season with three new productions Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann, Verdi’s Nabucco and the premiere of an opera based on Åsa Lind’s book for children, Sandvargen (The Sand Wolf).

Götterdämmerung seals the fate of Stephen Langridge’s ecologically-sustainable Ring cycle in Göteborg Opera’s 2021/22 season

The Göteborg Opera announces its 2021/22 season with a return to live performances including the grand finale of its four-year Ring cycle in the sublime apocalypse of Götterdämmerung marking the 400th anniversary of the city of Gothenburg.

Göteborg Opera goes local in Gösta Nystroem’s 1959 opera Herr Arnes penningar, set in the area’s medieval hinterlands, and a suffragette cantata by Gothenburg organist Elfrida Andrée, while looking abroad to Italy with productions of Puccini’s Tosca, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia, and Donizetti’s witty behind-the-scenes account of a chaotic opera rehearsal, Viva la mamma. The new season is the first to been conceived by Henning Ruhe, appointed Artistic Director Opera/Drama at the Göteborg Opera in June 2019.

Göteborg Opera’s Siegfried from Stephen Langridge’s sustainably-focused Ring cycle to premiere free online

Ahead of the 400th anniversary of the city of Gothenburg in 2021, the Göteborg Opera premieres the third instalment of Gothenburg’s ground-breaking Ring cycle, an epic four- year sustainably-focused project, as director Stephen Langridge returns to Gothenburg to stage Siegfried.

With the house currently closed to the public, Siegfried will premiere exclusively online from opera.se, with Act I available from Friday 26 March, Act II from Saturday 27 March, and the full three acts from Sunday 28 March until Wednesday 31 March. The production will be free to view, and sung in German with Swedish and English subtitles.

New productions of Nabucco directed by Jacopo Spirei and Don Giovanni directed by John Fulljames accompany the third instalment of Gothenburg’s ground-breaking Ring cycle, an epic four-year ecologically sustainable project, which continues on 29 November 2020 as director Stephen Langridge returns to Gothenburg to stage Siegfried.

Scandinavian premiere of Nadia Boulanger’s La ville morte given by the Göteborg Opera on International Women’s Day

Göteborg Opera presents Nadia Boulanger’s only opera La ville morte on International Women’s Day, Sunday 8 March, in the second ever performance of the great educator's work.

The Göteborg Opera Orchestra is conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing in a concert performance of the four-act La ville morte, Boulanger’s most significant work, which was written in collaboration with pianist and mentor Raoul Pugno to a libretto by Gabriele D’Annunzio. The cast including Katarina Karnéus as Hébé, Matilda Paulsson as Anne, Markus Pettersson as Léonard and Anton Ljungqvist as Alexandre.

Göteborg Opera celebrates 25 years in its Opera House with premiere of second opera in Stephen Langridge’s ecologically-sustainable Ring cycle

Gothenburg’s ground breaking Ring cycle, an epic four-year ecologically sustainable project, continues on 1 December as director Stephen Langridge returns to Gothenburg to stage Die Walküre. The 2019/20 season sees Göteborg Opera celebrate 25 years in its cutting-edge opera house, designed by Jan Izikowitz of Lund & Valentin. The House was inaugurated in 1994 by godmother Birgit Nilsson, who wished the company “all its happiness and success on the bountiful ocean of fine arts.”

World premiere staging of Martinů’s Trois fragments de Juliette held in Gothenburg

On 13 April, Göteborg Opera presents the world premiere staging of Martinů’s rediscovered Trois fragments de Juliette in a double bill with Poulenc’s La voix humaine, directed by David Radok and starring the multi award-winning coloratura soprano Kerstin Avemo, based at Göteborg Opera from 2018-21. The two operas interweave to form two acts of the same surreal love story, exploring questions of memory, illusion, and reality.

Ecologically-sustainable Ring Cycle explores Wagner’s theme of the exploitation of the earth’s natural resources

In their 2018/19 season, Göteborg Opera launches an epic, four year project to mount its first Wagner Ring Cycle which will create a landmark as a more ecologically sustainable opera production. The cycle directed by Artistic Director Stephen Langridge opens with Das Rheingold on 17 November and runs until 9 December 2018. It stars local Swedish stars including Anders Lorentzson as Wotan, King of the Gods and Katarina Karnéus as Fricka and will be conducted by Evan Rogister. Following in the footsteps of the great Wagnerian soprano Birgit Nilsson, Sweden has produced some of the greatest Wagnerian voices in subsequent generations.

Gothenburg Opera presents a new production of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in conjunction with Opera North

In a co-production with Opera North, Gothenburg Opera presents a new production of Strauss’ funny, chaotic romp Ariadne auf Naxos by Greek director Rodula Gaitanou opening on Saturday 3 February. In-house soprano Annalena Persson takes the title role alongside Daniel Frank as Bacchus and Sofie Asplund as Zerbinetta. Conductor Patrik Ringborg returns to the podium to conduct his first production of Ariadne auf Naxos, following previous productions of Strauss’ Salome and the world premiere of Notorious by contemporary composer Hans Gefors.

The Göteborg Opera announces 2017-18 Season

The Göteborg Opera announces its 2017-18 Season with the Scandinavian premiere of Jonathan Dove’s opera The Monster in the Maze and two further new productions including Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos and an unusual double bill of Weill & Brecht’s Seven Deadly Sins with Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. On the centenary of legendary Swedish soprano’s birth, the Göteborg Opera will host the starriest gala to pay homage to soprano Birgit Nilsson - “a voice of heroic proportions” (Guardian) and the greatest Wagnerian soprano of her day - by lining up eight leading Swedish Wagnerian sopranos including Nina Stemme. The Göteborg Opera is currently preparing for its first Wagner Ring Cycle directed by artistic director Stephen Langridge and conducted by Evan Rogister. The Ring will commence with Das Rheingold in the autumn of 2018 continuing for 4 years culminating in the 400th anniversary of the City of Gothenburg. The autumn of 2018 will also see GöteborgsOperans Danskompani make its debut at Sadler’s Wells with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s double bill of Icon and Noetic.

The Göteborg opera hosts the world premiere of ‘Notorious’, a new opera written for Nina Stemme and based on Hitchcock’s thriller coinciding with Ingrid Bergman’s centenary

Commissioned by the Göteborg Opera to open the 2015/16 Season in Gothenburg, Notorious, a new opera written for soprano Nina Stemme by Swedish composer Hans Gefors, will be premiered on 19 September 2015 in a new production by Keith Warner. Coinciding with Ingrid Bergman’s Centenary, Notorious will run for 12 performances until 1 November.
